Our carpet is original to the house. Is it worth cleaning, or should we just replace it?

A lot of Mira Monte homes still have their older wall-to-wall cut pile, and that carpet was often built to last. Cleaning is usually worth trying first. If the pile still stands up when you rake it with your fingers and the backing is sound, most of what looks like wear is packed-in soil and traffic-lane grit rather than fiber damage. Where cleaning won't fix things is matted, crushed pile in the main walkway, delamination, or seams that have let go. We'll tell you straight which one you have before we clean, and we won't sell you a service that can't change the outcome.

How long will the carpet take to dry here in the valley?

Longer than you'd expect, and that's normal for this end of the Ojai Valley. Afternoons are hot and dry, but the overnight and early-morning air comes in cool and damp, so carpet cleaned late in the day can still feel cool the next morning. We use as little moisture as the job allows and extract heavily on the last passes. The practical advice is to book a morning slot and let the hot part of the afternoon do the work. Keep interior doors open and a fan or two running. If the house has a raised foundation, don't close everything up tight overnight while the carpet is still damp.

Why do the entries and hallways look gray again so fast?

Decomposed granite. With unpaved driveways, dry chaparral and oak hillsides right up against a lot of these properties, fine granite dust and grit ride in on shoes and paws and settle down at the base of the pile. It's abrasive, so it dulls the carpet by scratching the fibers, not just by sitting on top. That's what we're after when we pre-vacuum before any water touches the carpet. Between visits, walk-off mats at both the front and back doors and slower, repeated vacuum passes in the entry do more good than anything else.

We have dogs, and the property backs onto dirt. Can you handle that?

Yes, that's a common combination out here. Dog traffic plus DG dust is a different problem than plain soil: the odor lives in the backing and sometimes the pad, not the surface, so a surface clean makes it look better and smell the same. We check the affected areas first, treat urine spots directly rather than blanket-deodorizing the room, and tell you honestly if a spot has gone through to the pad, because that's a repair question, not a cleaning one. Horse-property homes usually need extra attention at the door the barn boots come through.

What does it cost, and can you come out the same day?

We quote by the areas being cleaned, and the estimate is free. What moves the number is how many rooms and hallways, the condition of the traffic lanes, whether there's pet treatment or spot work, and stairs. You get a firm quote before we start, and if we find something once we're in the house that changes the job, we stop and talk to you rather than adding it to the bill. Same-day is sometimes possible depending on where we already are in the Ojai Valley that day, but with drying being slower here we'd rather put you in an early slot the next day than start a job at four in the afternoon.
